What's the Best Way to Help New Employees Settle In?

New employees can't be expected to perform well unless they're integrated into your business as part of the team. Begin by introducing them around the office, doing your best to enter them into conversations with your current employees rather than pushing them through quick introductions. Also, send out a companywide e-mail, or post a welcome for new employees in the break room so that everyone learns their name.

Taking the extra time to properly train new employees can save you money in the long run. Start with the big picture, including the various departments and services they provide. Then gradually narrow the focus to what will be the new employee's daily tasks. Provide written materials they can refer to when they have questions; end with supervised training that allows them to interact directly with customers or clients. You might also consider cross-training your employees in different departments so they can fill in when another employee is out sick or on vacation.
