The cost of registering a trademark in other countries is comparable to the cost of registering on here in the United States. It’s about $2,000. It could be more or less. The importance of registering in another country particularly if you’re trademarked in the United States is becoming well known is that you want to preempt people in those other countries from registering your mark before you do. If you get in there before they do, then you will not be in the position where you have to pay them in order to buy the registration that they may have obtained before you go into that country. In terms of franchise laws, you need to be aware that about 20 countries including Canada and Mexico require you to prepare disclosure documents before you offer or sell franchises to prospects in those countries. In Canada, the document is very similar to the document used in the United States. In Mexico, it’s very different but there are specific requirements, for example, interpretation into a language of that country. So you need to work with at a minimum an experienced franchise lawyer here in the United States and probably also with an experienced franchise lawyer in one of those countries to comply with those laws. In addition, some of those laws do require registrations with federal or provincial agencies and also require you to include certain special provisions in the franchise agreement to comply with local law.
