Does a Lawyer Need to Review Your HR Manual?

If you lack a sophisticated human resources department, and you're creating an HR manual from scratch, you should have a lawyer review it initially as well as any time you make changes to it. If you are modifying an existing manual that was originally reviewed by an attorney, you may not need a lawyer.

Particularly sticky employment issues include vacation, equal employment, and sexual harassment policies. Any changes you make in these areas should be reviewed by an attorney. As well, a periodic review by an attorney (say once every three years) who can make sure that the manual is consistent with any changes in federal, state, or local laws is advisable.
