You know, as you were asking that question I was reminded of a conversation I had with my wife's youngest sister. When I was in Cornell, my wife's sister was probably 11 or 12 years old and I was sitting around the kitchen table and she was doing her math homework and she wasn't particularly motivated to get it right or even study it and she said this is just a waste and I said to her, Sally, life is a math problem and you know, you just have to start to learn how to think this way and it will help you in everything. I later married my wife obviously and Sally turns 50 this year and she actually told me that I was right. So as it gets back to your question, accounting, financial statements, reporting the results of corporations or businesses, activity, all comes down to the numbers. You can only stay in business if you can support yourself in that business and the only way you know if you're supporting yourself is to add it up and see if the assets and the liabilities balance out so that you can continue to keep the business going and growing into the future. Understanding a financial statement is I think just a basic tool whether you go into the marketing side or business, the financial side obviously or even just sales. It's so important that people appreciate that the ... you know, that somebody on the sales side appreciates ... yeah, that's the revenue side but where does that revenue go and what does it support and why do we have to charge X dollars to a potential customer. A good salesman always wants to cut the ... you know, well we can sell it less. Well there's a reason sometimes why you can sell it less and I think having that basic appreciation of margins and the impact of the cost on the ability of the enterprise to succeed is fundamental. You don't need to have to be a CPA to appreciate what an accounting background can bring. Although my primary focus up at Cornell has been trying to increase the pool of talent that is available to Ernst & Young and actually the rest of the profession. The truth is if we can increase the pool of talent that's available to industry and to finance organizations around the world, we've really will have accomplished something.
