Who Can Help Me Patent My Invention?

Although there is no requirement that you hire someone to help you patent your invention, it is a good idea to hire either an attorney or a registered patent agent to help you with this process.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Web site has an Index of contact information for attorneys and agents with licenses to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. This list includes almost 7,000 active agents and over 20,000 active attorneys.

There are several other ways to find a lawyer or registered patent agent to help you patent an invention, including:

  • asking your colleagues and friends for recommendations;
  • looking in your local telephone book;
  • calling your local bar association or visiting your local bar association’s Web site,
  • going to The Legal Center at AllBusiness.com,
  • searching online for patent attorneys and registered patent agents at Lawyers.com, and
  • performing a search with a search engine for patent attorneys or registered patent agents in your state.
